Adeboye Storms Vanguard Again

The programme holds on Thursday, December 18, 2014, less than one week after the RCCG’s Holy Ghost Congress.

Adeboye, who said Vanguard was one of three newspapers he read daily, lauded the media house for excellence.

He said: “Somebody asked me the other day, ‘how many Nigerian newspapers do you read?’ I replied, ‘I read three Nigerian newspapers and Vanguard is one of them.’

Boko Haram: America Not Nigeria’s Friend, Says Gowon

A former Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon (retd.), has taken a swipe at the United States on its refusal to sell arms to Nigeria to fight the insurgency by the Islamic group, Boko Haram.
Gowon, in an interview with SUNDAY PUNCH, criticised the US for not selling military hardware to Nigeria, saying if the US was truly a diplomatic friend to Nigeria, it should do everything possible to keep the corporate existence of Nigeria.
This, according to him, includes assisting Nigeria to fight aggression from any quarter.
The US had on November 12, 2014, defended its refusal to sell cobra helicopters to Nigeria, saying the Federal Government was free to buy fighter jets from any other country.
The State Department’s spokeswoman, Jen Psaki, said, “Nigeria has purchased helicopters that originated in countries other than the US and nothing in our decision prevents Nigeria from obtaining weapons and equipment from other sources,”
Psaki had reacted to the allegation by the Nigerian Ambassador to the US, Prof. Adebowale Adefuye, that Washington declined to sell arms to Nigeria.
Adefuye had told members of the Council on Foreign Relations on November 10 that Washington was not doing enough to assist Nigeria in combating the Boko Haram insurgency in North-East geopolitical zone of the country.
He said, “The U.S. government has up till today refused to grant Nigeria’s request to purchase lethal equipment that would have brought down the terrorists within a short time on the basis of the allegations that Nigeria’s defence forces have been violating human rights of Boko Haram suspects when captured or arrested.
“We find it difficult to understand how and why, in spite of the U.S. presence in Nigeria, with their sophisticated military technology, Boko Haram should be expanding and becoming more deadly.”

But Psaki had stated that the US refused to sell the helicopters to Nigeria due to concerns about the ability of the military to use and maintain them.
The cobra is a combat aircraft with the ability to climb at the rate of 8.2metres per second. It is equipped with a 20 mm M197 3-barrelled Gatling cannon in the A/A49E-7 turret (750 rounds ammo capacity).
The spokeswoman also said there were ongoing concerns about Nigerian military’s protection of civilians when conducting military operations, adding that these had been discussed with the Nigerian authorities.
Gowon, while speaking to one of our correspondents, however, alleged that the US did same to the Nigerian government during the Civil War, when it refused to sell fighter jets to Nigeria to stop Biafra’s bomber jets.
As the military Head of State, Gowon had prosecuted the Nigerian civil war, aka Biafran War, which began on July 6, 1967 and ended on January 15, 1970.
The war was declared after an attempted secession by the Eastern Region of the country, which declared itself the ‘Republic of Biafra.’
Gowon said, “The same thing happened during the Civil War. The Americas refused to sell arms to us. I wanted them to help me with some modest aircraft so that I could chase out Ojukwu’s (Col. Odumegwu Ojukwu) B52 or B56 as they called it. That was all I wanted; not to shoot it down but to chase it away so that it does not drop bombs and kill innocent people.
“But the Americans refused to help us and they even refused to sell arms and ammunitions and the spare parts of the equipment that we got from them. And at the same time, they (America) were shipping aircraft and loads of arms and ammunition to Zaire. What sort of friends are they?
“You call them your friends and they say that they are helping us to fight terror. We don’t want their people (Americans) to come and fight the war (against Boko Haram) for us but, at least, we need the equipment.
“During my time (as Head of State), I had to go to the Russians to get the equipment we wanted in order to prosecute that war. If they cannot help us, they should allow us to go elsewhere and get what we want to ensure that we deal with this particular problem.”
A former Military Governor of Kaduna State, Col. Abubakar Umar (retd.), corroborated Gowon, while decrying that Western allies, who were paying much attention to the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria in the Middle East, “have decided to turn a blind eye to what is happening in Nigeria.”
He pointed out that Boko Haram is to Nigeria what ISIS is to the Middle East, saying they both threaten global peace and security.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also backed Adefuye’s position on arms purchase from the US.
The Director, Public Communication Division, Foreign Affairs, Mr. Ahmedu Ogbole-Ode, said the Nigerian ambassador had said it all on the relationship between Nigeria and America.
“Our ambassador to the US has spoken. He did not send himself there, so there is nothing more for me to add,” he said.
The US, however, said despite its insistence on not selling arms to Nigeria, it was committed to helping the country address the threat posed by Boko Haram and other violent extremist organisations.
The Press Attache, US Embassy, Abuja, Sean McIntosh, in his response to SUNDAY PUNCH’s enquiry on why the US avoids supporting Nigeria internal wars, said his country had been working and continued to work with Nigerian authorities to provide assistance with humanitarian programmes, intelligence and strategic communications.
When asked to also explain the US policy that states America’s non-committal posture to Nigeria and to name other West African countries affected by the policy, McIntosh said the US had continued to advise the Federal Government to adopt a comprehensive approach to violent extremists.
He said such approach emphasises respect for human rights including the freedom of religion, prioritises civilian security, and responds to the needs of victimised communities.
McIntosh listed the assistance rendered to Nigeria by the US to include the provision of $19m for the vulnerable and conflict-affected households in Nigeria by the American government in 2014.
He said, “More than $7m from the US Agency for International Development’s Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance supports health, water and sanitation services; the delivery of emergency relief supplies and protection activities for women and children in north-eastern Nigeria.
“USAID/Food for Peace has provided nearly $7m in emergency food assistance and the US Department of State has provided more than $5m to fund protection activities in affected areas.
“In addition, the US government provided more than $54m in humanitarian assistance in Cameroon, Chad and Niger, targeting refugee populations from neighbouring countries, including Nigeria.”
The American embassy spokesman explained that the USAID was also in the process of starting two new programmes that would address critical educational needs for both boys and girls in northern Nigeria.
These, according to McIntosh, include a ‘crisis response’ programme to be funded with about $20m to $30m. He said the programme would reach out with basic education to internally-displaced persons and others affected by the violence in the north-east, including Bauchi, Gombe, and Adamawa states.
“The programmes also include a ‘flagship’ five-year education programme that will strengthen systems to provide greater access and learning (increasing reading skills) for primary school children, principally in Sokoto and Bauchi, and other states of the North as conditions allow,” he explained.
McIntosh stated that two additional large USAID projects focused on maternal and child health and democracy and governance are geographically co-located in Bauchi and Sokoto states in an effort to maximise their developmental impact. He added that expansion into additional post-conflict states would be considered as conditions and resources allow.

Army Sends Boats To Find Kidnapped Expats

Security personnel have stepped up efforts to rescue three kidnapped foreigners in the oil-rich Niger Delta, a military official said.
Colonel Anka Mustapha said that he's confident that the foreign construction workers will soon be rescued because of a heightened security presence that involves sending patrol boats into the region's remote creeks, rivers and swampy mangroves.

The two Pakistanis and Indian were abducted Wednesday night in the town of Emakalakala, which is in the southern coastal state of Bayelsa, by gunmen operating on speedboats.
Recent activities in the Niger Delta have left communities on edge.
Three police officers were killed in October after their boat, which was escorting a load of oil for the Nigerian Agip Oil Company, was hijacked by pirates on the Barbara River in Bayelsa.
Sixoil company workers were also kidnapped in October.

10 Things Men Don’t Know About Women

\

Men think they know women and everything that comes along with them. However, there are some things that men are still yet to understand about women.
There are so many things that women do that men have no clue about. Even the women might have no clue, but that is just the way we were created. This article would give you a little insight on that.

1. Jumping jacks to fit into our jeans:
Guys, did you know how we have to struggle to fit into those tight jeans you think your girlfriend looks pretty in. I am not talking about the boyfriend jeans that are a little baggy. I am referring to those tight skinnys that make her shape look amazing. Well, for ladies, it is a struggle, especially the ladies with really big butts. Sometimes you have to jump for a minimum of five times before the jeans would get to its proposed station where it is supposed to be.

2. Lose the tight clothing:
Did you know that women feel a sense of relief when a tight piece of clothing is taken off their bodies. For example, those tight jeans you had to fit into all day for lectures, the office or whatever the case may be. We always feel a sense of relief at the end of the day when that is off. We know how to make everything look so simple.

3. We always know our rivals:
For those in a relationship, a girl always knows the girl who likes her boyfriend, the girl who calls the boyfriend “her bestie” but secretly has feelings for him. The other girl who would tell all her problems and look for a shoulder to cry on which she thinks your boyfriend is the best person to fit that slot. The truth is, a girl always knows the cunning ones. Our instincts are the strongest.
4. We check out other girls:
A girl always wants to look at the next girl’s outfit. No matter where they are, they always have to stare and what the next girl is wearing. It could be the hair, clothe, slippers etc. We do this a lot and we can’t help it.

5. A woman always looks at herself in a mirror:
To further expatiate on this, whenever a woman passes a mirror-like object, it does not necessarily have to be a mirror, she always has to take one last look at herself, or adjust something on her outfit. The truth is, no matter how modest the person might be, this is a trait that cannot leave our female system. It is simply part of our well-being.

6. Never decisive on what to wear:
Most women try on about five different clothes and still cannot pick one they want to wear. They say this syndrome is for people who have too many clothes. Most women are indecisive when it comes to clothes especially when they need to go for an event they know they have to dress to oppress. It’s worse when they know their crushes would be attending. As a guy, make sure your girlfriend starts dressing up two hours before you if you know she is this type of person.

7. Most women do not practice what they preach when it comes to love:
An example is when they are having boyfriend issues. In the midst of her friends, the woman would tell her friends that she would never call the guy no matter what, she might even end up insulting him all because she’s trying to put on a front. Later at night, when she’s alone, she’d call him and beg him if she has to. Sometimes, she won’t tell her friends that side of the story.

8. We love sleep overs with girlfriends:
Whenever we are with our girlfriends, we like to do lots of fun things that the guys might classify boring. We play dress up, talk about boys, play games, make videos or even dance off in front of the mirror. Ladies love to do this. We can go on gisting till 4am if time permits. As much as we want to spend some time with the boyfriend, we also want to play around sometimes with our girlfriends too.

9. Sometimes, we actually want to sleep alone. Most of the time, most guys think every girl wants to cuddle at night. After interviewing many ladies on this topic, I guess we are not always touchy afterall. Sometimes we just want to sleep on the bed alone if possible so we can sleep well. As the boyfriend at times like this, if you are cold, use a blanket!

10. Most women like to be appreciated in public:
Now as much as some people do not like public display of affection (PDA), we still like to be appreciated in public. There are other ways to boost our confidence without being too touchy. Tell us we look beautiful when your friends are present, hold our hand in public etc. It just shows we care and women love that.

APC Buried PDP In Edo Many Years Ago – Oshiomhole

EDO APC CHAIRMAN, ANSELM OJEZUA (L) ENGR. CHRIS OGIEMWONYI & HIS WIFE (M) WITH GOV. ADAMS OSHIOMHOLE (R)
Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State on Friday took a direct shot at the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, describing it as a party “buried” by the All Progressives Congress in Edo many years ago.
The governor made this known during the reception to officially receive a former Minister of State for Works, Engineer Chris Ogiemwonyi, and over 2,000 other defectors, including 25 palace chiefs, into the APC family.
The former minister was presented with the official membership card of the party by the State Chairman, Anselm Ojezua, in company of other party leaders and legislators from the state and federal levels.
Oshiomhole said that the desire of the APC to create change at the federal level was inspired by evidence of development in the various sectors of Edo and other states controlled by the party.
On employment, the governor said that no fewer than 29,000 youths had been employed by the state government, while staff salaries were promptly paid.
He said, “If anybody imagine what has happened in this state in six years, then you can better calculate how much they stole from the treasury of this state and how many miles they set us backwards in terms of where we are supposed to be.
“That is why when the President said that Edo will fall, I said, ‘Well, who is speaking? Can a man who is on the ground speak to a man who is on his feet? PDP has already fallen and buried in Edo State many years ago.
“Federal PDP shared money to PDP states, including where the president lost election. They did not give one dime to the people of Edo State because we voted wrongly.
“In Auchi, erosion has swept away more than 50 per cent of the houses and killed several others. They shared the ecology money but gave no dime to the people of Auchi”.
While commending the people of the state for embracing change in the state, Mr. Oshiomhole urged them to ensure that their votes counted in the 2015 presidential elections in order to end the leadership of the PDP at the centre, as they did in Edo in 2007.
“If you carry this logic to the next level, we will remove them from Abuja the way we remove them from Benin”, he said.
The governor described the former minister’s defection as a move motivated by a sheer desire to join a progressive political vehicle that was in business only for the purpose of adding value to the lives of Edo people, having been concerned about the failed past and inspired by the positive development of the moment.
According to Oshiomhole, Engineer Ogiemwonyi’s membership came at a time when the party had begun to “filter out those who represent the forces of darkness and politics of share the money” in order to establish the politics of “develop the state and uplift the people”.
Earlier Ogiemwonyi, who noted that his defection was the result of 18 months of painstaking consultation, said that he decided to join the APC in other to contribute to the development of the state.

Obasanjo Renews Cold War With Jonathan

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo is one man who thrives in controversy. In and out of power, Obasanjo has remained a newsmaker because of what he does, what he says, how he says it as well as what time and forum he chooses to say it.
Apart from the peculiar air of selfesteem with which he moves around, he is endowed with what some people refer to as an uncommon native intelligence and sense of humour that many Nigerian stand-up comedians would envy.
By sheer providence, he remains the only one dead or alive who has steered the ship of the Nigerian state twice and in two different eras. First, he became the Head of State following the assassination of General Murtala Mohammed in the February 13, 1976 military coup.
Obasanjo supervised a political transition programme that culminated in a general election. He voluntarily relinquished power to President Shehu Shagari on October 1, 1979, and retired to his farm in Ota, Ogun State. Thereafter, he assumed the role of an elder statesman and social critic. He never spared any of his successors until 1999 when again, fate thrust upon his shoulders, the leadership of the country. Obasanjo’s diatribe Since his last exit from power in 2007, Obasanjo has been in the news more for his comical rhetorics, scathing criticisms and sarcastic punches which he often throws at political friends and foes.
In his latest outing, the Balogun of Owu hit President Goodluck Jonathan below the belt when he dismissed the latter’s performance in office as “below average”, a poor rating by all standards. “I rate this current administration below average,” he said. Obasanjo gave this damning verdict last Friday while addressing a group of writers at the Ake Arts and Book Festival in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
Realising that by pointing one finger at Jonathan, he (Obasanjo) also had at least three fingers pointing backwards, he quickly exonerated himself from the perceived shortcomings of the Jonathan administration like a father disowning his own son. He said that rather than take blame for bringing Jonathan to power, Nigerians should be given credit for helping Jonathan, a man from one of the minority ethnic groups, to ascend the highest office in the land.
Obasanjo also seized the opportunity to debunk the speculations that he deliberately imposed the late President Umar Musa Yar’Adua on the nation as successor because he knew the man was sick and will be unable to rule the country. According to him, Yar’Adua provided concrete evidence that he was healthy and he (Obasanjo) also confirmed his state of fitness with medical experts.
These tales are as old as the power vacuum saga when Yar’Adua was incapacitated and Nigerians including Obasanjo demanded that Jonathan, then a vice president, should step into the shoes of the ailing ruler. On the strength of that clamour, the National Assembly invoked the Doctrine of Necessity and Jonathan became Acting President and subsequently President when Yar’Adua eventually passed on to eternity.
The motivation Obviously, Obasanjo’s current assessment of the Jonathan administration has its roots in politics. It cannot be divorced from President Jonathan’s aspiration to seek a second term in office and the orchestrated plans by his political opponents within and outside the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to stop him from contesting and winning the 2015 presidential elections.
It is a renewal of the ferocious hostility which Obasanjo launched a year ago when he wrote the president a lengthy open letter criticizing the policies of the present administration particularly in relation to the fight against terrorism and insurgency in the North East region. In the letter dated December 2, 2013, Obasanjo raised several issues about the Jonathan administration that portrayed it as ineffective and lacking in purposeful leadership.
Obasanjo was vehemently opposed to the idea of President Jonathan seeking re-election because according to the former President, Jonathan had in 2011 committed himself to serve only one term given the circumstances of his ascension to the office. Obasanjo and other critics of the current administration are not impressed with Jonathan’s handling of the fight against the Boko Haram insurgency. In the past three and half years, this terrorist group which is hinged on radical Islamic creed, has terrorized and overran several towns in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states.
President Jonathan’s declaration of a state of emergency in these states has not resolved the crisis of insecurity in the region. Between December last year when Obasanjo wrote his famous letter and now, the challenge of insecurity has taken a worse shape. The Boko Haram fighters have become more emboldened with the kidnap of about 200 Chibok schoolgirls, the seizure of Nigerian territories and the declaration of these occupied territories as Caliphates and the imposition of Shariah laws on the inhabitants of these communities.
Therefore, it would appear that Obasanjo’s latest rating must have been based on this seeming overwhelming national security challenge. Talk back In a swift response to Obasanjo’s latest attack on Jonathan administration, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Public Affairs, Dr. Doyin Okupe, disagreed with the “below average” rating and instead scored Jonathan high on almost every sphere of governance. Okupe described the comments credited to the former president as “untrue, misleading and clearly do not tally with the facts on the ground.” According to him, Jonathan has performed better than all other previous leaders of the country since 1960.
“In terms of performance and achievements, no administration since 1960 when Nigeria gained independence from Britain has done as much as that of President Jonathan. Every discerning and unbiased Nigerian will definitely attest to this fact as the evidence stare all of us in the face. “We will show here that contrary to Chief Obasanjo’s position, the Federal Government under President Jonathan has performed excellently given the prevailing circumstances and resources available,” Okupe said.
In a bid to further prove Obasanjo wrong, Okupe delved into the rigours of showcasing the achievements of the current regime on key aspects of national life. He reeled out in details what the administration had done in agriculture, aviation, power, roads, education, health and other sectors of the economy. The Presidency stated that before the Jonathan administration came on board, Nigeria imported N500 billion worth of rice in 2011, but that a radical approach adopted by the administration changed the story.
“Today, Nigeria has reached an unprecedented 60 per cent sufficiency in rice production, a feat, which the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) recently described as capable of raising world rice output to a record high in the next 12 next months. Nigeria is already on its way to self-sufficiency in rice production as sizeable chunk of its 167 million populations are currently feeding on rice grown and processed locally. “For the third year running, Nigeria has remained the number one destination of investors in Africa and one of the first 10 in the World.
The Jonathan administration has reversed almost all of the negative economic ratings of Nigeria before he came on board and there are verifiable facts from the World Bank, Standard and Poors, Moody’s and Fitch about the Nigerian economy which has become the largest economy in Africa and the 26th largest in the World. “Our economy now has great potential to grow better and be more impactful in the lives of ordinary Nigerians with the current efforts being made by the government to ensure inclusiveness through various interventionist policy programmes,” Okupe said.
On the vexed issue of insurgency in the North East, the Presidency noted that while it is true that Nigeria has been faced with incidents of insurgency and terrorism especially in the last few years, it is also true the Jonathan administration has successfully contained the initial widespread and limitless activities of the insurgents which were prevalent in 12 states of the North including the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. “While it is true that the present activities of the terrorists in the three North Eastern states have become more deadly in mindless killings, kidnappings and supposed territorial seizures.
Government has made giant diplomatic strides with our neighbouring countries in order to checkmate the crisscrossing of the insurgents. “In spite of this war however and in view of the other giant strides and achievements recorded in other sectors, it beats the imagination that anyone would say that President Jonathan has performed below average in office.
On the contrary, he has provided quality leadership and exemplary vision in transforming the Nigerian nation and giving hope to Africa’s most populous nation,” the presidential aide said. Second explosion Barely three days after this lengthy response, Obasanjo exploded again and this time, took a swipe at President Jonathan and his administration over what he described as the promotion of unbridled corruption and poor handling of the insurgency in the North East. As in the previous attack, the former president chose the occasion of a book launch to launch his verbal missiles.
Obasanjo dismissed the explanations of the Jonathan administration on the insurgency and blamed the government squarely for the escalation of the crisis. “It is a gargantuan danger to the nation and to all Nigerians. President Jonathan’s understanding of Boko Haram phenomenon suffered from wrong reading and wrong imputation. That is what led us to where we are today.
It took even the President more than three years to appreciate and understand that it is a terrible mix of poor education or lack of education, misinterpretation of what Quran teaches and stands for, poverty, unemployment, injustice, drug, gun trafficking, human trafficking, fallout from Libya, revenge, frustration, struggle against inequality, imitation of international terrorism leading to training and part of the absorption by international terrorists groups and general poor governance including corruption,” Obasanjo said.
He alleged that the Jonathan administration had elevated corruption to an unenviable height, promoted incompetence and ethnic bigotry to an unprecedented level while neglecting the economy. According to him, these developments, coupled with the non- investment in the oil and gas sector over a period of time and the crashing price of crude oil would have a lot of negative impacts on the economy.
He said: “Nigeria cannot continue to indulge in disdain of truth, elevation of corruption and incompetence, reinforcement of failure, condonation of heinous crimes and celebration of mediocrity, tribal bigotry, fomenting violence and anti-democratic practices in states and National Assembly. “Corruption in the National Assembly also includes what they call constituency projects, which they give to their agents to execute, but invariably, full payment is made with little or no job done.
“In all these, if the executive is absolutely above board, the offending members of the National Assembly resort to subtle or open threat, intimidation and blackmail of the executive. “For quite some time, the covered and hushed-up corruption has had its toll on the economy. We may have to borrow to pay salaries and allowances. Revenue allocation to states and local governments has already drastically reduced. Capital projects at all levels may have to be drastically cut or stopped.”
