Amaechi Replies Jonathan: I Spoke About Governance, Not Your Person

Rivers State governor, Mr Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi has said that the issues he raised at the recently held mega rally in Port Harcourt were about governance and not a direct attack on the persons of President Goodluck Jonathan, his wife, Dame Patience and the federal government.

The Presidency had in a statement issued in Abuja on Sunday, and signed by presidential spokesman, Dr Reuben Abati described the governor as a rascal and blackmailer, who is always willing to denigrate the office of the President in a reckless attempt to promote his selfish political interest.

But Amaechi, who spoke through the state commissioner for information, Mrs Ibim Semenitari, told newsmen in Port Harcourt yesterday that he never referred to the persons of the president and his wife, but only referred to issues that have direct bearing on the people of the state.

Semenitari said, “The first thing to say is that clearly, that statement must have been written before the rally. If it wasn’t written before the rally, then I am at a loss as to where Dr Abati saw the so-called statement against the president, his wife and the federal government.

“There was no point during the rally when the wife of the president was mentioned and that was because issues being discussed were not issues about persons but about governance. The issues were in no way related to her as she does not hold any official position in government. Therefore, there is no need referring to her where governance issues are being discussed.

“As regards to Mr President, again, Governor Amaechi did not refer to the president in any personal capacity.”

He did refer to the fact that the federal government’s Ministry of Aviation has not completed the remodelling of the Port Harcourt International Airport, which was started at the same time as Enugu, as Lagos, as Kano, as Calabar.”

“He did refer to the fact that the Rivers people were being treated like refugees and we have become internally-displaced persons in our own state and our only offence was that we gave the President two million votes in 2011. He did complain that the Rivers people only feel marginalised, but are poor cousins to the Federal Government. He did complain as to why Rivers people continue not to have the funds that come from their oil wells and the fact that the oil wells that belong to Rivers State were taken to Bayelsa and Abia States.”

2015 AFCON Qualifier: Super Eagles to train in Warri for Congo

For all the Warri guys, this is for you....lol.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has announced that the Super Eagles will train in Warri,Delta State, ahead of the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Congo in Point-Noire. NFF General Secretary, Musa Amadu dropped this hint while meeting with the Super Eagles technical crew and support staff inside his office in Abuja. Nigeria is billed to confront the Red Devils of Congo on November 15 in a must win game that will be played on an artificial pitch.

“The pitch in Warri where the Super Eagles will train is an artificial pitch and should provide the required feel and match conditions as the pitch where the game will be played in Congo,”Amadu revealed. “This is a very crucial game and we cannot afford to take anything for granted. “After the game in Congo, the team will then proceed to Uyo to prepare for the last qualifier against South Africa. “The Nigeria Football Federation is working round the clock to ensuring that all the team needs to make a success of the November assignments are provided so that the Super Eagles are able to defend their title in Morocco.

“For us,the real challenge is to go to Congo and get the desired result that will put our qualification aspirations back on the right track,” Amadu added. The Super Eagles will need to beat Congo with a clear two goal margin or get a higher scoreline of victory than Congo got in Calabar to be ahead of the Red Devils in Group A after the November 15 clash.

FIFA gives Nigeria Monday deadline

For the umpteenth time this year the world football governing body, FIFA, has given Nigeria a deadline to avoid suspension from international football.

Confederation of African Football President, Issa Hayatou, has warned that Nigeria is in danger of being banned by FIFA by Monday (today) after a court sacked the recently elected Nigeria Football Federation Executive Committee. Indeed, it was explained that the Super Falcons were allowed to play the AWC final match against Cameroon on Saturday after a plea was made to FIFA executives led by Sepp Blatter.

Last Thursday, the Federal High Court sitting in Jos gave a ruling setting aside the NFF elections of September 30 in Warri which had ushered in the new Exco. The court ruling has angered FIFA officials who had warned that the country would be banned if there were any further interference from any civil court on purely football matters.

Hayatou told the Minister of Sports Dr. Tammy Danagogo in Windhoek, Namibia that they were fed up with events in Nigeria.

He said, “I (Hayatou) had to plead passionately with FIFA President, Mr. Sepp Blatter not to take action on Nigeria on Friday, because Nigeria was in the final of the African Women Championship and a ban on your country would have been bad for the competition and our sponsors. We all heard the news of the court ruling on Thursday, and the football world is angry with Nigeria. That is the truth.

“The FIFA letter that came to your Federation before the elections of September 30 was very clear about an automatic suspension should there be any interference with the political process, and after the elections went ahead, we all thought you had settled your issues.”

Man Sells Ebola.com for $200,000

While most people’s reaction to the Ebola outbreak is at least fear and at most, well anything upwards from fear, one man has managed to make money.

Businessman, Jon Schultz of Blue String Ventures, who bought Ebola.com for $13,500 in 2008 [I can’t imagine why] has now capitalized on news headlines around the globe and flipped the domain for $200,000 [Now I see it!].

According to an SEC filing, the buyer is a Russian company called Weed Growth Fund, which is paying $50,000 in cash and handing over 19,192 shares, valued at around $164,000, that it holds in another  company.

It is unclear what the Russian company that will take ownership of the domain has planned for Ebola.com. For now, the website remains unchanged with generic news articles on Ebola and Amazon affiliate links.

Schultz and his business partner Chris Hood also own BirdFlu.com and H1N1.com. Their tactic is pretty clear: buy generic domains they can flip for a sizable profit. That approach looks a bit murky when you’re dealing with a lethal virus that’s claiming lives every day.

Schultz was inspired to buy Ebola.com by the movie ‘Outbreak’, which ‘entranced him’.

Ini Edo Dares Ex-Hubby In Houston, USA

Weeks after her crashed marriage, Nollywood actress, Ini Edo, has apparently bounced back in style. The actress has put her travails behind her and has even promised her fans that she won’t allow her failed marriage to deprive her of happiness.

To prove that further, the Akwa-Ibom State born actress stormed Houston, USA for the just concluded African movie awards in North America, the Golden Icons Academy Movie Awards (GIAMA) which took place at the Stafford Center in Houston, Texas.

It could be recalled that Ini's ex-husband, Philips Ehiagwina lives within the neighborhood of Houston, but the star actress didn't seem to give a damn if she might run into him in the course of touring the town.

Ini and Phillip's wedding, also took place in the same town on Saturday February 28, 2009, so they were more chances of the divorced couple running into each other or perhaps meeting with their old joint friends.

Nevertheless, the unshaken actress ceases every moment to post the photos of all her activities in US on her Instagram page, not minding whose Ox is being gored.

Although she has been receiving tons of criticisms and tongue lashing by concerned fans, Ini insisted she had long moved on with her life and would not want to be dragged into the issue any further, a development which may have put to rest many questions on the minds of her fans.

A disappointed fan said she was one of those who prayed for her marriage so that it won’t crash, but when she read her post that she had decided to walk out of the union, she was shocked. “I said to myself after her decision that I won’t trust any actress again”.

The actress recently said that she had realised that “every situation does not need a reaction,” apparently responding to some of the questions being thrown to her by her fans.

Why Kenneth Okonkwo Is Worried Ahead Of The 2015 Elections

Veteran Nollywood actor, Kenneth Okonkwo who recently declared his political ambition is currently worried and the reason is not far fetched.

The Enugu State born popular actor is not in a good mood not because he’s no longer getting scripts as an actor, but simply because the character he played in that foremost movie, Living in Bondage, is seriously posing a big challenge to him.

Kenneth opened up that 'Andy' has really overshadowed his real names. He said that after playing “Andy” in that classic movie, people hardly know him any more as Kenneth Okonkwo.

This, he said, has become a very big problem to him, even as he has declared his intention to go into politics. “I will have to sensitize the voters and make sure that they are familiar with the name Kenneth Okonkwo and not Andy before the general election.”

Kenneth joined the long list of Nigerian entertainers venturing into politics, after he picked up the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, nomination form during the week.

He wants to represent the people of Nsukka/Igboeze South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives in 2015.

After obtaining his form, excited actor posted on his online campaign site: “Join me in thanking God for assisting me obtain my nomination form of our great party PDP to contest for the House of Representatives to represent Nsukka/ Igboeze South Federal Constituency. To Him be all the glory.”

The actor who is also a lawyer expressed optimism that he will defeat his opponents at the polls.
Kenneth was brought to limelight following the role he played as ‘Andy’ in the movie, Living in Bondage, released in 1992.

Why I stopped acting –Emeka Ike

Emeka Ike is not new to controversies. He has been very vocal about the movie industry, and many times, he has ruffled feathers. Ironically, he himself has not featured in movies in a long time, making many to ask what right he has to condemn activities in the industry.

When Box Office met him recently he revealed why he has been off the set for a while.

He said: “I have stopped acting for a while now because the industry has lost its salt. The actors were putting some acts that were annoying me. I acted in Nigerian movies with a Nigerian accent, but other countries shouldn’t come here and try to change our accent. When I see my colleagues forming fake accents, I always wonder, ‘What’s wrong with this one?’ If you are an Indian, you do it like the Indians, likewise other countries. I must tell you, I am too busy for that. So I got myself busy with other better things than living fake Nollywood life.”

Ike is also very critical about the various associations and guilds in the movie industry especially the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN). He said this about the guild: “There are five people who have taken the law of Nigerian movie industry into their hands. They are Emma Ogugua, Murphy Stephen, Sunny McDon, Okey Bakassi and Ifeanyi Dikeh. These five people registered AGN as their personal business. No other individual can come in. The idea is money rules the world. Money is the main reason they are there. There are some people who rejoice whenever Nigeria is losing in a football match. Some other people make more money when Nigeria loses match in an international stadium. Some people just sit and wait for things to go wrong in Nigeria, that’s when they make huge money. These people you can’t do anything to them. They are the enemies of the nation. They are in every sector; banking, oil and gas, and the entertainment industry is not left out. They make things not to work, but they, as individuals are going forward. But we have to try to get these kinds of people off our back to be able to move forward.

“We have had AGN for long, but I can’t remember the last time we had actors’ congress, where all speak their minds on issues bothering the industry. The last congress was when Vivian Ejike was still here, Kate Henshaw too was still very much in the business.”

When asked what could be done to remedy the situation, Emeka said: “How do you rule a set of people that do not see or know themselves? All the money you are collecting, how do you account for it? You, the press, should investigate this and tell the whole world the truth than to dramatise Emeka Ike for being too outspoken.

Love And Relationship: 6 Ways To Enjoy Being Single

Not having a sweetheart shouldn't have to be such a drag. Here are tips on how to enjoy your independence while it lasts. You don't have to be in a relationship to have fun. Being single is equally great.

Yes, being in a relationship is great. It makes you happy and you surely get to spend a memorable time with your loved one. But that doesn't mean you cannot have fun all by yourself as well.

Being single is necessary at times, it helps you understand yourself better and also lets you do things that you otherwise wouldn't have been able to, had you been with someone.

Read the tips below and discover how to be "happily single":

1. Go on a holiday alone: One of the best ways to enjoy yourself is by venturing out all by yourself. It makes you feel liberated and builds your confidence as well. Choose a destination as per your personality. If you love shopping Paris would be a great option or if you love water sports Thailand or Venice could be your best bet if you can afford it.

2. Focus on your career: If you have a job that you love, this is the time to concentrate on it. Says clinical psychologist Mimrah Ansari, "Spending your maximum time to work will not only help you achieve a professional high, but will also make you feel happy and powerful. This does not mean that you have to turn into a workaholic, but giving your best at your job will liberate you as well."

3. Spend time with friends: If you have missed out on socialising with your gang of pals, go ahead and party hard. You could meet your friends over the weekend or simply call them over to your place after work hours and just chill with them. These memories will go a long way in nurturing you and creating wonderful memories.

4. Shop or go out for a movie: How many times have you cancelled plans because your guy or girl couldn't make it for that late night show? Well, you don't have to rely on them anymore. There is something about going out all by yourself to watch a movie or simply shop. Says relationship counselor,  Sauleha Shaikh, "Most people don't like the idea of going out all by themselves. It helps build your confidence and also shapes your personality. It teaches you to be independent."

5. Live for yourself, not by yourself: Often people confuse between living for themselves with living by themselves. You must realise that this is the time that you need to invest in yourself. It shouldn't be your aim to only look out for love, rather it should be a quest to find yourself and learn how you can be the best. If you have been thinking of learning a new language or doing some sort of social work, do it now. Spend this time to enhance yourself.

6. Revisit your interests/hobbies: Utilise this time to indulge in your interests. If you love cooking, simply start your own cooking class and invite your friends or neighbours to come and learn from you or if you love gardening, create your own garden on the terrace or balcony.

Essential tips for living the perfect single life:

# This is the time for introspection rather than looking out for love once again.

# Reflect on your past relationships and try and learn from the mistakes that you have made in the past.

# Be prepared for love to come in your life rather than preparing for it.

# Be open to meeting and interacting with new people in your life, just don't hold onto old ones.

Collapsed Building: Coroner insists T.B Joshua must personally testify in court

The Coroner handling the inquest into the cause of the building collapse at the Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN), Oyetade Komolafe, has insisted that the founder of the church, Temitope Joshua, must appear before the court to testify in person.

Mr. Komolafe made this pronouncement on Monday after SCOAN’s counsel, Osita Nnadi, suggested that Mr. Joshua does not need to personally testify since he wasn’t an eyewitness to the incident.

Mr. Komolafe shut down the suggestion saying Mr. Joshua has been summoned to appear before the court to testify and must comply with the directive of the court.

“The court has summoned him. He must come to court. He cannot sit and be sending words to us. That is unacceptable. He has been summoned, the counsel should advise him accordingly,” said Mr. Komolafe.
Olalekan Ojo, a supporting counsel for the SCOAN, insinuated that the coroner was trying to play to the gallery by insisting that Mr. Joshua must personally testify in court.
“Witnesses are not to be summoned for the purpose of sensationalism,” Mr. Ojo told journalists outside the courtroom at the end of the day’s proceedings.
“Witnesses are to be summoned for the purpose of giving material evidence. He (Mr. Joshua) was not at the scene. He was not the contractor,” he added.

Meanwhile, contrary to the narrative of the church that the guest house was sabotaged and that a “controlled explosion” might have led to the collapse of the building, the representative of the Lagos State Fire Service, Adebayo Olayimika, told the court that the collapse building did not show any sign that it was brought down as a result of an explosion.

Mr. Olayimika who testified that the result of the “360-degree survey” he conducted at the site soon after the building collapsed showed that floors collapsed on top of each other.
“There was no brick scattered and the floors has collapsed on top of one another. The building did not depict any sign of explosion and implosion.”

He also added that he did not perceive any toxic odour, which would have been the case it had been an explosion.
The fireman also added that those that were rescued were whole and none of their body parts were dismembered, which would have occurred if there were an explosion.
He also said there was no fire outbreak at the site on the day the building collapsed. According to him the fire that occurred at the site happened three days after the incident occurred.

“There was fire incident on the September 15. The fire was caused by friction as a result of rescuers cutting iron rods that produced heat and there were burning materials such as mattresses and the cooking gas was concentrated in the area.”

The counsel representing the police, Chukwu Agwu, however asked Mr. Olayimika if he has any qualification in bomb and ordinance handling to have come to the conclusion that the building was not brought down by an explosion.

The fireman replied that he supervised the rescue effort during the 2013 explosion at the popular Jankara Market in Lagos caused by explosion of firecrackers. He also added that the need for the “360 survey” was to gather physical evidence and the evidence he gathered did not suggest that building was brought down due to an explosion.
Mr. Komolafe also scheduled how the court would take witnesses for the rest of the inquest as follows:

On October 28, the Pathologist, Lagos State Emergence management Agency (LASEMA), Lagos State Ministry of Works and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) are billed to testify. On October 29, the Nigerian Red Cross Society, Building Collapse Prevention Guild and the Lagos State Commissioner for Physical Planning would testify.

The South African Embassy, the Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON) and the Surveyor General of the State were slated to testify on October 30.

Mr Joshua, the contractor in-charge of the building and the Nigerian Police were billed to testify on November 5 while testimony from Channels Television and TV Continental would be taken on October 6.

South African-Nigerian relationship not strained. The South African Ambassador, who also attended the inquest, told reporters that the incident would not strain the amiable relationship between South Africa and Nigeria.
Over 115 people died in the incident and 85 of them are believed to be South Africans. The SCOAN is popular among South Africans who frequent the church in large number in search of spiritual healing.

Following the high South African casualties, many believe that the seemingly delay of the Nigerian authorities in dealing with the issue would lead to diplomatic face-off between both countries.

“The South African relation with Nigeria comes a long way. We established this relation during the struggle against apartheid. This actually will make us work closer together.”
He also said that the incident was not the reason his country seized the $15 million meant for the purchase of arms from Nigerian dealers.

“The South African relation with Nigerian is priceless; it cannot be sold for $15 million. These are two separate incidents.”

Strike: NLC begins mobilisation of workers over wage deregulation

The leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) on Thursday said it has started mobilising workers for industrial action following ongoing attempt to remove the national wage from the Exclusive Legislative List to the Concurrent List by the National Assembly in the on-going amendment of the 1999 constitution.

To this end, the congress will on Monday, October 27, hold an emergency meeting with leaders of all its affiliate unions in Abuja.
Peter Ozo-Eson, NLC general secretary, who issued the threat notice disclosed that October 27 was aimed at mobilisation of workers nationwide.

He said, “We appeal to the Nigerian people to show understanding in the event of fall-outs from our proposed action.
“We at the congress see the removal of wages from the Exclusive List as an act of treachery masterminded by conservative governors and their cohorts in the National Assembly which will do the polity no good.
“We wish to state in no uncertain terms that the congress will mobilise its members to resist this move to scrap the national minimum wage.

“We recall that last year our national campaign and mobilisation on this subject matter was suspended at the instance of the leadership of the Senate which promised to revisit the issue now that they ‘are better informed’.
“We recall paying tribute to the House of Representatives, who in their wisdom did not contemplate removing wages from the Exclusive List.

“It is also worth recalling that the just concluded National Conference retained wages on the Exclusive List in deference to the logic of the argument for the necessity of maintaining wages on the Exclusive List.
“We have generated and circulated enough literature on this subject matter and we are completely at a loss as to the rationale for this turn-around.

“We advise the National Assembly to hearken to the voice of reason and the voice of the people by urgently retracing their steps because the consequences of their action could be dire for the nation.

“We have explained as often as necessary that the basic rationale for the fixing of a minimum wage is to ensure that employees, particularly the unorganised and unskilled, are not exploited by their employers to the extent that their pay becomes so low that it creates a pool of the working poor.

“Minimum Wage Laws are in force in approximately 90 percent of the countries of the world today. Why would Nigeria leave this group for the negative 10 percent?
Meanwhile, Emeka Ihedioha, deputy speaker, House of Representatives, on Thursday disclosed that the National Assembly at no time removed Labour from the Exclusive List.
Ihedioha’s reaction came on the heels of proposed nationwide industrial action threatened by the organised labour.

Pro-Atiku Group Asks Buhari To Drop Presidential Bid

A political pressure group within the All Progressives Congress, APC, Turaki Vanguard, has asked former Head of State, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd), to drop his ambition to contest the 2015 presidential election.

The group, which is drumming up support for the presidential bid of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, said in a statement on Thursday that the former military ruler’s presence in the presidential race would neither enrich it nor enhance the fortune of their party, the APC.
The APC presidential ticket is believed to be a two-horse race between Atiku and Buhari with both men insisting that they are the best candidate to fly the opposition party’s flag in the February, 2014 presidential election. The duo had one time or the other contested and lost the election.
In the statement by its National President, Oladimeji Fabiyi, the pro-Atiku group said, “We, the members of the Turaki Vanguard, a political pressure group operating independently of the Atiku Abubakar Campaign Organization, having carefully monitored and observed recent pro-Buhari activities sponsored by the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, hereby call on the former Head of State and presidential aspirant of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Major General Muhammadu Buhari to quit the presidential race.
“We are making this call on the former Head of State with all sense of responsibility having in mind that General Buhari will neither enrich the race nor enhance the political fortunes of the opposition APC whom Nigerians hope will salvage their country from the 15 years of death grip and mis-governance of the PDP”.
The group alleged that the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, was clearly championing the emergence of Mr. Buhari, a retired army general, because it had mastered the art of defeating him in the polls and would be comfortable with his candidacy.
The Turaki Vanguard said it was no longer a secret that the PDP had armed itself with the ammunition to floor the former head of state whom its National Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh, said was the “easiest to defeat”, having done so in the 2003, 2007 and 2011 presidential polls.
“In making this call, we are mindful of the need for all patriotic Nigerians to help prevent another political ridicule of a former Nigerian leader like General Buhari, which would be unavoidable if he continues with his 2015 aspiration”, the group said.
“We hope the elderly and revered General will heed our advice and those of other respectable Nigerians like Sheikh Ahmad Gumi”.

Reps Seek Upward Review Of Corp Members’ Allowances

The House of Representatives on Thursday in Abuja passed for second reading a bill seeking an improved welfare package for members of the National Youth Service Corps.
The bill seeks to amend the NYSC Act No 51 of 1993 by making provisions to enhance the welfare of corps members, encourage acquisition of special business and commercial skills at the end of the annual service year.
Moshood Mustapha (All Progressives Congress – Kwara), who sponsored the bill, expressed regrets over unemployment and poverty rate bedeviling the country.
He said the proposed amendment would encourage self-employment.
Section 7(3) of the proposed amendment seeks to increase state governments annual subvention from N500,000 to N50m, to enable NYSC to cater adequately for the welfare and skill acquisition needs of corps members.
It said such minimum subvention shall be provided before the commencement of the service year, for which it was intended.
Section 18 (2) also seeks to increase minimum accommodation allowance from N250 per month to N5,000 while transport allowance might be increased from N150 per month to N5,000.
The sponsor added, “The bill seeks to amend the NYSC Decree 51 of 1993 to provide for the training of corps members to acquire skills and business.
“It would enable them to seek other means of sustainable livelihood and fend for themselves other than the white collar jobs that are in acute shortage”. (NAN).
