Beyonce Highest Paid Woman in Music in 2014 with $115 million: Forbes

Beyonce is the highest paid woman in music in 2014 with estimated earnings of $115 million, more than double what she pulled in last year, Forbes magazine has said.

The huge sum, most of which was from her world tour, propelled Beyonce, 33, from fourth place last year and put her firmly ahead of pop star Taylor Swift, 24, with $64 million.

Swift jumped up one spot from last year to No. 2.

Pop singer Pink, 35, climbed up from No. 8 in 2013 to third with 52 million dollars.

“Beyonce played 95 shows during our scoring period, bringing in an average of $2.4 million per city,” said Forbes, citing data from the Pollstar trade magazine.

The R&B singer’s self-titled album released last December and endorsement deals pushed her earnings up further assuring her the top spot.

Barbados-born Rihanna, 26, with 48 million dollars and Katy Perry, 30, who earned an estimated 40 million dollars, rounded out the top five on the annual list.

Madonna, 56, who ranked No. 1 last year, failed to make the top 10 in 2014.

Lady Gaga, 28, slumped from No. 2 in 2013 to ninth place this year with estimated earnings of 33 million dollars.

Forbes compiled the list after estimating pre-tax income calculated for the 12 months from June 2013 to 2014 based on record sales.

The computation also includes concert tickets, touring information merchandise sales and interviews with concert promoters, lawyers and managers.

It also looked at data from the Pollstar, the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) and tracking firm Nielsen SoundScan.

Women politicians more reliable than male counterparts – Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Wednesday admitted that women in politics are more reliable than their men counterparts.

Mr. Obasanjo said this when the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, NAWOJ, paid him a courtesy visit at his Hilltop residence in Abeokuta and bestowed on him an award titled Father of Nation

“In politics, women are more reliable than men. When a woman says she’s with you, you can really say that she is with you. But if a man tells you he is with you and you catch him in another meeting, he will tell you it is politics, it should not be so,” he stated.

“When a politician words cannot be believed then you are turning politics into another thing. A politician must be a man or woman of honour that believes in morality,” Mr. Obasanjo said.

The former president said politics must be decent and gone into with dignity and honour that women are known for. He said one of the best journalists that ever served him was a woman, referring to late Oluremi Oyo.

He frowned at a situation where African women are not often given chance to exhibit their potentials because of cultural and religious background adding that this should not be so as men alone cannot make a society.

Earlier in her speech, the National President of Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, NAWOJ, Ifeyinwa Omowole, said NAWOJ thought to recognise Mr. Obasanjo’s commitment to Nigeria’s unity.

She said NAWOJ is planning to have a unity conference in 2015 and would have Mr. Obasanjo as the Chief Host.

The NAWOJ National President, accompanied by the Deputy President, Bilikis Oladimeji, Lagos NAWOJ Chairperson, Dupe Olaoye Osikolu, and members of the Ogun State executive of the association presented the Father of the Nation award to the former president.

South Africans face rolling power blackouts after coal silo collapse

South Africans could be suffering escalating power outages by the weekend following the collapse of a coal silo at power plant.

The country's power utility, Eskom, said that the blackouts that started on Sunday were likely to continue.

The news came as the government announced that Eskom needs $6.5bn (£4.7bn) to avoid a power crisis.

The power cuts are being blamed on poor maintenance practices stretching back many years.

Already tight capacity became further squeezed after the collapse of a coal silo at the Majuba power station in the east of the country on Sunday.

It is the second time this year that Eskom has imposed rolling blackouts.

Economic vulnerability

The company generates almost all of South Africa's electricity and analysts say that the power outages could severely affect the economy.

The country's mining sector in particular is very vulnerable to any reduction in electricity available.

Last month, the national Treasury announced it would inject R20bn ($1.8bn) into Eskom, but some analysts say that is nowhere near enough to reverse years of underinvestment and lack of maintenance of the power infrastructure.

The blackouts and the potential for them to become worse has worried foreign investors for some time.

The rand fell slightly against the dollar in morning trade on Wednesday.

Boko Haram: 50,000 displaced Nigerians living in extremely difficult conditions – Red Cross

The International Committee of the Red Cross, ICRC, on Wednesday released a report indicating that over 50,000 persons displaced by insurgency in Nigeria’s North-east zone are living in extremely difficult conditions.

ICRC’s Head of Delegation in Nigeria, Karl Mattli, said the organisation has distributed food and household items to displaced persons who are taking refuge in Maiduguri, Borno State.

“Not only did people have to flee their homes in Kodunga, Kaga, Gwoza and Damboa, they also lost all their belongings and their means of earning a living. They didn’t have enough food and they lacked important basic items,” said Mr. Mattli.

“The additional strain placed on communities by hosting the displaced reached the point where it was more than they could bear.”

After carrying out an assessment of the situation, Mr. Mattli said the ICRC and the Nigerian Red Cross launched an emergency operation to meet urgent needs.

ICRC staff and more than a hundred Nigerian Red Cross volunteers distributed 960 metric tonnes of food and other relief items to 51,000 displaced persons.

Most displaced people who arrived in Maiduguri in the past few months were settled in government buildings, schools or official camps.

After much suspense and keeping the identity of her man away from the prying eyes of the press and the general public, the face of Uche Egbuka, the fiancé of Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) president, Ibinabo Fiberesima, has finally been revealed.

Uche and Ibinabo were recently on vacation with the latter’s children in Disney land and Universal World of adventure.

The handsome gentleman is a graduate of English Language and Literature/Letters from University of Ibadan, where Ibinabo also graduated from. He obtained a Master of Science degree in Health Services Administration from the Central Michigan University and later got a Master of Divinity (MDiv) degree at the Liberty University in 2013.

His work career started as a Press Intern with the Government House Press Corps in Akwa Ibom State in 1994.

He was later employed as a Security Analyst at the Nigerian Consulate Port of Spain, Trinidad & Tobago. In 1998, he joined the United States Army as a Logistics Specialist/Quarter Master.

From 2005 to 2008, he was Chief Operating Officer, Agape LLC before joining LifeCare Solutions, a Health, Wellness and Fitness company, as Director of Operations.

Uche is currently employed as Health Systems Specialist at the Eisenhower Army Hospital, a position he took in 2012.

Uche and Ibinabo will be getting married in a 2-day affair on December 18 and 19, 2014 at the bride-to-be’s hometown in Okrika, Rivers state.

Mubi: NEMA Sets Up 7 More IDPs Camps, Registers 15,000

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) said on Sunday it had established seven new camps in Yola to accommodate Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) from the recent attacks in Mubi, Adamawa State.

Alhaji Muhammadu Kanar, its North-East Coordinator, disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Yola, shortly after he distributed relief materials to no fewer than 3,000 IDPs at Daware camp in Fufore Local Government Area.

Kanar said that 10,000 IDPs were registered within the last two days adding that several thousands were still trooping into the camps.

He said the state government had provided over 100 vehicles to help evacuate those that were stranded in the bushes and highways after escaping the insurgents’ attacks in Mubi and Uba towns.

He said that President Goodluck Jonathan had directed the immediate release of thousands of tons of relief materials to be distributed to the IDPs to ease their suffering.

According to him, NEMA had been working with the Adamawa State Emergency Management Agency to reach out to IDPs who escaped to Cameroon.

The District Head of Daware, Alhaji Muhammadu Iya, thanked the federal and state governments for their effort to reach out to the IDPs.

Iya advised government to organise a special prayer to seek the Almighty’s intervention toward ending the attacks pointing out that such divine intervention was the only permanent solution to the crisis.

NAN reports that among items distributed were assorted food items, blankets, detergents, mats, mosquito nets and drugs.

Comedian Julius 'De Genius' Agwu has dumped his gubernatorial ambitions.

According to information gathered from close sources, top Nigerian comedian, Julius Agwu, may have dumped his dreams of being the governor of Rivers State come 2015, as he may have been scared out of the race.

The decision is coming after he held a meeting with his Ikwere kinsmen who urged him to dump his ambition, at least for now, because they need him alive, and he had to cave in to their demands.

His manager, Prince Sunday Uwem, posted the news that Juliuswho is also called 'De Genius', has succumbed to higher reasoning and has dumped his ambition.

There was a meeting on Thursday, October 30, between Julius Agwu and his kinsmen from Ikwere, and it was agreed that he should step down from the governorship race because the current Governor Rotimi Amaechi is his friend and they are both from the same area.

They’ll want the position to rotate to another part of the state and Julius Agwu has decided to listen to his people and withdraw from contesting.

Another source also hinted that some money may have changed hands between Julius and the Amaechi after the governor invited the comedian to a meeting before then and also urged him to step down based on rotation quota of the state.

Others conclude that Julius stepping down does not signify the end of his political ambition as he may still go for another position, as it is being rumoured that he has been offered a legislative position.

Recall that a few weeks back, Julius had cried out that several cult groups in the state had been making overtures for him to join them if he hoped to win the governorship elections. Some insiders opine that this fear may have added to Julius' hasty retreat from the murky waters of politics.

8 Ways To Make Your Smartphone Battery Last Longer

If there is one thing that can be annoying about a smartphone, it's a battery that runs down too soon.

Here are some tips on how to keep that battery power flowing.

The details of configuring settings vary somewhat among the different platforms but these items are worth looking at.

Dim the screen: Lighting up the screen is one of the big power consumers. This is one place to conserve a lot of battery capacity. Although you may have an automatic display brightness control, it is still a good idea to adjust brightness manually. Displays are often much brighter than needed and you can really add to the battery life by using only as much brightness as needed.
Turn off the vibrator: Of course, if you are in a big meeting and expecting an important call you'll leave it on. But often, there is no real need for it.
Turn off Bluetooth: Unless you are connecting to other devices, there is no need for this
Only use 4G/LTE connections when you need to: 4G /LTE radios are voracious consumers of power. If you can use a Wi-Fi hotspot, save energy (and maybe money) by turning your data connection off.
Turn off Wi-Fi when not in use: This is the converse of tip number 4. If you are not using a hot-spot to connect, there is no need to have the Wi-Fi connection running
Limit use of GPS location services: Shut off Notifications, or limit the number of apps that can use your location to those that really need it. A lot of apps constantly checking your location can be a power drain (not to mention a privacy problem)
