Buhari Appoints Acting INEC Boss, As Jega Bows Out

Yesterday we had from newspapers & television websites that Ambassador Mohammad Wali received handover from Jega as the acting INEC Boss. But the latest information from presidency media aide contradicted the report and reveals that;

President Muhammadu Buhari has appointed Mrs Amina Bala Zakari (pictured top left) as the Acting Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) following the conclusion of the term of office of Prof. Attahiru Jega.

The Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Barr. Danladi Kifasi, who conveyed the appointment in a letter, said it was with effect from 30th June 2015 until the appointment of a substantive Chairman.

Mrs. Zakari is presently a National Electoral Commissioner at INEC.

Much of England and Wales is basking in sizzling temperatures as hot air from the Continent makes Britain hotter than Rio De Janeiro, Ibiza and Lanzarote.

The Met Office said temperatures hit a sweltering 29.3C (84.7C) at Heathrow in London by 2pm today – making it the hottest day of the year so far.

However, that figure is set to be smashed tomorrow with forecasters predicting the mercury will reach 35C (95F) widely across the south of England.

The heatwave has prompted officials to issue a level 2 health warning, amid fears the scorching heat could cause 'hundreds of deaths'.

People with respiratory illnesses, the elderly and very young are all being warned to stay out of the midday sun, while hayfever sufferers are also being warned to take extra preventative measures as the pollen count and UV levels are currently extremely high.

(Updated) Jega Finally Bows Out As INEC Chairman, Handover To Wali

Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Professor Attahiru Jega, has formally bowed out as the Chairman of the electoral body, Tuesday.

Jega, who was appointed by former President, Goodluck Jonathan in 2010, has served out his 5 year statutory tenure as the chairman of the Commission.

The former Vice Chancellor of Bayero University, Kano, had insisted that he would not seek a second term in office even if he is offered the opportunity, saying he has done his bit. He reasoned that there were other well qualified people in the country who should be allowed to contribute their own quota.

Professor Jega officially handed over leadership to the commission’s National Commissioner, Ambassador Mohammad Wali (pictured top left), on Tuesday.

CBN Extends BVN Registration Until October 31

Following several appeals by Nigerians, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has extended the deadline for the registration for Bank Verification Number (BVN) to Oct. 31.

Daily Post has gathered that the decision also followed the uncontrolled crowd at the different branches of Nigerian banks that has made business transactions almost impossible.

CBN Director, Banking and Payment System Department, Mr Dipo Fatokun, while disclosing this in a circular issued today in Abuja said, “It has come to our notice that the BVN registration has elicited tremendous interest from the Nigerian bank customers who crowded the banking halls in order to beat the deadline.

“In view of the foregoing, it has become imperative for the banks to extend the timeline for all customers to have the BVN.

“The deadline for the enrollment is hereby extended from June 30 to Oct. 31,’’ Fatokun stated.

However, the extension is expected to facilitate a smooth completion of the registration exercise and as well give Nigerian bank customers in the Diaspora, ample time to register.

Ex-FCT Minister’s Aide Remanded In Prison For ₦192M Fraud

For allegedly aiding and abetting land fraud for about two years, a former Chief of Staff to the Federal Territory Minister, Yau Mohammed Gital, has been remanded at the Kuje prisons.

Justice Abubakar Talba of the FCT High Court, Gudu issued the order for the remand of the suspect and his accomplices who were alleged to have used their positions to demand and receive various sums of money amounting to N192 million under the pretence of securing land allocations for unsuspecting Nigerians.

Gital was charged along one Shuaibu Yakubu, Jibril Tahir and Jibmir Ventures Nigeria Limited by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, before the judge on a 10-count charge bordering on obtaining money under false pretence, conspiracy and forgery.

The accused persons reportedly swindled unsuspecting land applicants of the huge amount, promising to use their positions to secure easy land allocations from the FCDA for them, a promise that turned out to be false.

However, when the charges were read to the suspects in court, they all pleaded not guilty and asked for speedy trial in the case.

One of the charges slammed on the suspects reads: “That you, Yau Mohammed Gital, being the Chief of Staff to the Honourable Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and member of the Land Allocation Committee, Federal Capital Territory Administration; Shuaibu Yakubu, being a former Special Assistant to the former Chief of Staff; Jibril M. Tahir, being the Managing Director of Jibmir Ventures Nigeria Limited and Jibmir Ventures Nigeria Limited sometimes between September 2012 and March 2014 in Abuja within the Jurisdiction of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory Abuja, with intent to defraud, conspired to do an illegal act, to wit: obtain monies by false pretences from various unsuspecting persons under the false pretence that the said monies were for the processing/facilitation of land allocation by the Federal Capital Development Authority which you knew to be false and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 8 (a) of the Advance Fee Fraud and other Fraud Related Offences Act, 2006 and punishable under Section 1 (3) of the same Act.”

But counsel to the accused persons, Nura Imam, urged the court to admit them to bail while awaiting trial.

But disagreeing with them, Justice Bello ordered the accused remanded in prison custody and adjourned the case till July 2, 2015 for ruling on the bail application.

Fear As Boko Haram Suspect Allegedly Moves To Anambra Prison

There was tension in Anambra State yesterday, following reports that 47 Boko Haram suspects have been relocated to Ekwulobia Prisons in Aguata Local Government Area of the state.

When the rumour of the alleged relocation broke out weekend, hundreds of youths stormed the streets and all markets in the state were shut in protest.

A visit to Ekwulobia Prisons, however, did not show any sign that new inmates were brought there and the prisons officials said they had not received any signal to that effect.

However, Vanguard gathered last night that the 47 Boko Haram prisoners were brought to Ekwulobia prisons in the dead of the night of Sunday, June 28, amid tight security.

Yesterday, agitated people in various parts of the state were seen making telephone calls and Ekwulobia, the fourth largest city in the state, has been getting renewed attention, with those whose relations are serving sentences in the medium security prison expressing worry over the development, which they said would put their relations there at great risk, in view of the antecedents of Boko Haram suspects.

The state Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Dr. Uju Nwogu, could not confirm the development, even as she said Governor Willie Obiano had gone to Abuja to meet President Muhammadu Buhari over the matter.

Following the governor’s absence, the weekly state executive council meeting, which holds every Monday, could not hold yesterday.

Obiano’s Senior Special Assistant on Media, Mr. James Eze, had in a statement, exonerated the governor from the relocation arrangement.

Eze said further that Governor Obiano’s efforts to establish understanding and achieve speedy and peaceful resolution of the matter went to the highest authorities, adding that he was given assurances that the matter would be looked into, with a view to resolving it.

There were also feelers that traders in the commercial town of Onitsha have vowed to continue their protest, following alleged relocation of the prisoners from the Northern part of the country to Ekwulobia Prisons.

Christians In Nigeria Condemn US On Same-Sex Marriage

Umbrella body of Christians in Nigeria, the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, yesterday condemned the United States Supreme Court decision on Friday to legalize gay marriage across the 50 states of the United States of America which has generated concern among Christians across the globe who believe that marriage should be reserved for one man and one woman.

In a telephone interview, the National Secretary of CAN, Rev. Musa Asake said the US decision shows how low human beings are trying to avert the original plan of God for marriage which is between a man and a woman.

Asake said it is absurd for anybody to come up today to tell a different thing other than that institued by God before the foundation of the world.

“Same-sex marriage is un-biblical, it is not right, it is uncalled for and our politicians must be very careful so that they don’t tow the line of the West because if we do we will just be destroying ourselves.

“There is just no way, you can unite a man and another man in marriage. Where will procreation come from? If that was the practice those people advocating the practice would not have been around today. So it’s against God’s original plan for creation and it’s not good,” he maintained.

The CAN scribe therefore enjoined Nigerian politicians to tread carefully, stressing that the nation had already enacted a law criminalizing same-sex relationships defying pressure from Western governments to respect gay and lesbian rights.

According to Rev. Asake, “nobody should tamper with that law which prescribed 14 years imprisonment for anybody engaged in any same-sex amorous relationship. It is not the right part, it’s not our culture; it is not good for our religious stance, it’s disgusting to even think of it.

“I want the government of the day and politicians generally to be very careful not to plunge this country into darkness,” he said, noting that the same-sex marriage being recommended by Western nations is not good for our families, it’s un-cultural and unwelcome here.

The government of the day, he maintained, should close its eyes and it’s ears to an America that is going down the drain.

Also responding, chairman of Christian Association in the South South, Archbiship God-do-well Avwomakpa described the US Supreme Court’s decision as an error against humanity. 

“He said Nigeria had made the world to “believe that there’s a God that answers prayers. That is why people are trying to pollute our relationship with God, so that we can agree that men should marry men and women should marry women. Even the animals in Nigeria forbid it. Also, the ancestors forbid it.”
