Expert Says Adoption Of Western Lifestyle Contributes To Breast Cancer Cases

A consultant radiologist, Prof. Millicent Obajimi, on Friday in Lagos said that the increasing adoption of western lifestyle had contributed to the increase of breast cancer cases in the country.
Obajimi of the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, Oyo State, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that women should take positive steps toward leading a healthier lifestyle.
She said, “breast cancer is the commonest cancer in women.

“It is even getting worse with the adoption of a western lifestyle and habits like smoking, drinking alcohol and unhealthy diet.’’
The radiologist said that sedentary lifestyle, lack of regular physical exercise and obesity also increased the risk of a woman developing breast cancer.
“The burden of breast cancer in the country is also on the increase because there is poor information on it .
“Many women are ignorant of the importance of breast self-examination (BSE), clinical breast examination (CSE) and mammography when you reach a certain age.”
Obajimi said that early detection of breast cancer could increase the chance of survival and better treatment outcome.
She advised women in their 20s to have monthly BSE and CSE every three months, while women who are more than 40 years are encouraged to have a yearly mammogram for early detection.
“The best protection is early detection and awareness is the key to early detection.
“As a woman, we are saying be breast-aware and know what is normal for you, so that any unusual changes in the breast can be noticed early,” she said.
She urged healthcare providers to help increase awareness on breast cancer by talking to their patients on the importance of regular breast examination.
She said that healthcare providers should also help spread information on the warning signs of breast cancer and its risk factors.
NAN reports that every October is the Global Breast Cancer Awareness Month recognised by the World Health Organisation (WHO) to help increase awareness of the disease.
The month is also set aside to raise attention and support for the awareness, early detection and treatment, as well as palliative care of this disease. (NAN)..

Keshi Thanks Jonathan For Allegedly Reinstating Him

The news about Keshi’s return broke yesterday. Reports said that the former Eagles’ coach was to resume his duties and manage the national team in the November qualifiers for the 2015 African Cup of Nations (AFCON).
It would be recalled that his contract expired in summer, and for the 4 played qualifiers Keshi worked on an interim basis, with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) considering whether to extend his contract or not.
Eventually they decided to ask Shaibu Amodu, the former Super Eagles’ coach, to proceed with the remaining 2 AFCON qualifiers.

It was reported yesterday however that presidency held the emergency meeting with NFF head Amaju Pinnick Wednesday night and strongly recommended the football body to reinstate Keshi.
Reacting to the development, Keshi was said to have expressed his willingness to lead Super Eagles through the must-win November encounters with Congo and South Africa, Leadership reports.
The allegedly returned coach made this known yesterday in Abuja after a brief meeting with the Minister of sports and Chairman National Sports Commission (NSC), Tammy Danagogo.
He praised Jonathan for believing in him.
“Really, if it is true that President Jonathan had intervened and asked me to return as Eagles coach, I just thank him for that. I have not heard it, you guys are just telling me. I only came here to say hello to the minister of sports, Danagogo that’s all. Returning to Eagles’ job is going to be very hard, but I have my mind to think about it first, but if the president has ask me to return, for the peace to return in the country football which is important to the players too and for the love I have for the country I have served for fourteen years as a player while not despite the treatment meted on me.”
It would be noted that the NFF and Stephen Keshi used to have tense relationships. One of the issues made public was that the coach had been paid his salary for months.
And the football body accused Keshi of his reluctance to follow the rules and of choosing players not based on their performance, but based on his own preferences.
It is worth mentioning however that there has been no official confirmation by the NFF about Keshi’s reinstatement at the position of the Super Eagles head coach.

Tambuwal’s Police detail to be restored

The police orderlies controversially withdrawn from guarding the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, will be restored on Friday, TheCable reports.
Quoting a presidency source, the medium noted that the Acting IG “clearly acted on bad legal advice in taking the decision”. He revealed that President Goodluck Jonathan will convene a meeting on Friday to resolve the impasse.

Dispelling rumours that the order came from President Jonathan, the government source argued that; “the president believes in the rule of law and it is becoming glaring that the police did not get good legal advice in taking the decision they took. If the president was the one that ordered it, as claimed, why would he not also order DSS and civil defence to withdraw their men?” he asked.
Checks by DailyPost actually indicate that the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Civil Defence Corps did not withdraw their men as they are seen within the premises of the Speaker who just defected from the PDP to the APC.
The presidency is yet to make an official pronouncement on the development despite the fact that all fingers are pointing in the direction of Jonathan.
The Acting Inspector-General of police, Suleiman Abba, yesterday ordered the withdrawal of security aides, citing Tambuwal’s defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) as reason.
The action elicited widespread condemnation as being politically motivated. It is a common knowledge that officers of the police force are not empowered to interpret a constitutional matter.
Meanwhile, APC Senators are spoiling to make it difficult for Abba’s appointment as IGP to be confirmed. The IG, who was appointed in acting capacity in August, needs to be confirmed by the Senate.
It was gathered that leading APC senators, in reaction to the Tambuwal saga, have vowed to block Abba’s confirmation.
It remains to be seen how well they can effect their threat since Abba’s confirmation requires only a simple majority or a voice vote, and the APC is bereft of the numbers in the upper chamber of the National Assembly. PDP currently has 65 Senators out of the 109 lawmakers in the Senate.

Rock super-chic ripped jeans

Will you rock these jeans....
A torn or ripped jean is casual and edgy and is the look many top celebrities are rocking this season. This style, initially seen on teenagers, has now been embraced by fashionistas. Ripped jeans come in various forms. From washed, dark blues, white to black and the occasional grey in between, with or without embellishments, everything goes as long as it features the mandatory holes and shreds. Ripped jeans can be worn in the most casual or sophisticated ways. From classy to edgy, the ways to enhance the shredded jeans appear endless and exciting. Knowing how to wear the shredded jeans in a perfectly stylish manner is what puts you in the category of the super chic.
The trick to making ripped jeans look pulled together is to pair them with basic staples, such as a silk blouse, tee-shirts, a great pair of stilettos, chic blazers or a men’s wearinspired jacket. Ripped pale denims look ladylike when paired with stilettos and a statement jacket. Ripped jeans are appropriate for many occasions. When paired with heels, you get an elegant evening look; when combined with sneakers, you get a more sporty and casual one.
Limit your accessories to a roomy bag or clutch and a statement necklace for an evening date; add a floral blazer or a denim jacket for an effortlessly, street-ready look. Ripped jeans always look great when paired with a tucked-in blouse, a structured bag, a chic overcoat, a statement heel, and plenty of wrist swag. In order not to look too tacky or vulgar, go for the right ‘rip’. Before you rock this trend, you may need to ask yourself, ‘how ripped is too ripped?

UPDATE: Jonathan Orders Withdrawal Of Tambuwal’s Security Details

Two days after formally communicating his defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC), the security details of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon Aminu Waziri Tambuwal have been withdrawn on the orders of the President, Commander-in-Chief.

Yesterday evening, the Presidency convened a high level meeting ostensibly to discuss Tambuwal’s defection. In attendance At the meeting were members of the National Working Committee of the PDP, Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Muhammed Bello Adokie, some PDP Governors as well as members of the House of Representatives from the party.
Indications that all was not well emerged Wednesday evening after the conclusion of the APC’s extra ordinary national convention in Abuja where dependable sources disclosed this. The tumultuous welcome accorded the Speaker at the Convention and the overwhelming outpouring of goodwill from the general public is said to have rattled the Presidency resulting in frenzied reaction.
As the number four citizen in the hierarchy of protocol in the country, the Speaker is entitled to a high level security made up of men from the Police, Civil Defence Corps and the Department of State Security (SSS).
They jointly provide security to the Speaker and his immediate family around the clock.
A source in the know of the situation said: “Early this morning, few minutes after midnight to be precise, top level security report informed the Speaker that orders have been given for the withdrawal of his security details. He was told that a verdict will be entered against him by a court in Abuja on Wednesday or Thursday. The ironic thing here is that why not wait for the verdict before any action is taken? ” the source asked.
Efforts to get the reaction of the Speaker has so far proved futile. Calls and sms sent to his spokesperson, Malam Imam Imam, have so far remained unanswered

Boko Haram Locally financed —Intelligence Reveals

It has been revealed that the Boko Haram sect is locally financed.
An intelligence source revealed to the Nigerian Tribune that analysis carried out by security agencies showed that the terrorists got their funds through banditry, looting, bank robberies, kidnapping and demand for ransom.
Also it was gathered from the intelligence source that they looted Mamman Ghadafi’s Armory in Libya, which is the biggest in Africa, from where the arms found their way to Mali, Chad, Nigeria and other neighbouring countries.

The source added that the insurgents also got their arms through Nigerian soldiers, who usually abandoned them and ran away.
On the $9.3 million, South Africa arms deal, the security source said the transaction was legitimate, legal and constitutionally organised in line with international best practices.
However, the source revealed that along the line, something went wrong and what was supposed to be neatly executed, went awry, as South African officials posed problem.
According to the security source, the South Africa officials looked at the documents accompanying the money, including the end users’ certificate, which were signed by the officer of the National Security Adviser and discovered that all were in order.
It added that some fifth columnists in Nigeria used their high level connection to botch what was supposed to be a legitimate business, in order to embarrass the government, because of their connection with the South African government.
The source added that everything had been cleared and the dust settled down, while both countries were careful so that it did not degenerate to diplomatic row.

Zambian President, Michael Sata dies in London

Zambian President Michael Sata has died in London, where he had been receiving treatment for an undisclosed illness, the government said.
Roland Msiska, secretary to the Zambian cabinet, said in a statement on Wednesday that Sata died late on Tuesday in London, where he was being treated.

"As you are aware the president was receiving medical attention in London," Msiska told state television.
"The head of state passed on October 28. President Sata's demise is deeply regretted. The nation will be kept informed on burial arrangements."

2015: PDP rejects two presidential aspirants after collecting their money

Two presidential aspirants on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, are ready to lock horns with the ruling party for saying they would not get the forms after payments.
It was gathered that the national leadership of the party refused to sell its presidential nomination and expression of interest forms to the aspirants after paying for the forms.
Two of the aspirants, Dr. Abdul-Jhalil Tafawa-Balewa and Prof. Akasoba Duke-Abiola, were at the national secretariat of the party in Abuja on Tuesday to purchase the forms, but they were turned back.
Punch reports that first to arrive was Tafawa-Balewa, who hails from Bauchi State. He is also the son of Nigeria’s First Republic Prime Minister, the late Abubakar Tafawa-Balewa.
It will be recalled that all the levels of the party, including the National Executive Council had endorsed President Jonathan as its sole presidential candidate.

Tafawa-Balewa had on September 21 frowned at the action, saying nothing would stop him from running for the presidential race.
He had asked, “What type of democracy do we have? Is the PDP a communist party? Where is the place of internal democracy?”
Rather than being issued his forms, the aspirant claimed that he was told by officials of the party that the forms were not ready.
Tafawa-Balewa said he was told that all other forms were on sale except the presidential nomination and expression of interest forms.
He said, “I have paid for my forms. I was, however, told that they don’t have the forms ready. I am still here. I will send some of my people here on Thursday to come and pick the forms.”
He said he went to the office of the Secretary of the party, Prof. Wale Oladipo, and the National Organising Secretary, Alhaji Abubakar Mustapha, but was denied the forms.
Also speaking on the refusal of the party to present her with her forms, Duke-Abiola, who is one of the widows of the late Chief MKO Abiola, described the action of the party as questionable.
Abiola, who displayed the Diamond Bank Teller with which she paid her N2m to the party’s bank account, wondered why the party would issue her receipts and refused to sell the forms to her.
Female aspirants, like her, are expected to pay just N2m for the expression of interest form while the nomination form is free for them.
The presidential aspirant said she was told by the National Chairman of the party, Alhaji Adamu Mu’azu that the party printed only one form.
She said, “I have the receipt from the party after paying my money. But they said they printed only one presidential nomination form, even though the guidelines do not say that.
“The National Organizing Secretary and the National Chairman said the party printed only one form. I asked that they should give me the one they printed to me since I was there. They laughed and said whether I didn’t know who they printed it for. This is a fraud.”
She said that she would not ask for a refund of her money, but that the party must sell the forms to her.
In his reaction, the National Publicity Secretary of the party, Chief Olisa Metuh, said he was not aware that the aspirants came.
“I will have to find out from the national Organising secretary, because I’m not directly involved in the selling of that forms. I’m only involved in the management of the image of the party”, he said.

Stephen Keshi Returns As Coach of Super Eagles

Chris Giwa, the Nigeria Football Association (NFA) Chairman who was restored to office on Thursday by a Jos court ruling, said on Monday that sacked coach of the national team, Stephen Keshi will resume work with the team today.
Giwa who spoke to Us before the inauguration of interim committees at the NFA secretariat in Abuja urged all Nigerians to remain calm while the issues surrounding the NFA family crisis and the much-touted looming FIFA ban were resolved.

Giwa reiterated that his board had reviewed and decided to sustain the out-of-contract assignment given to the technical crew of the Super Eagles led by Stephen Keshi.
“It was agreed at our board meeting held Thursday that the technical crew headed by Keshi should remain in charge.
“The issue of qualification to AFCON 2015 is not about Keshi. Therefore, all he needs now is support from all of us.
“We have two more games left in the qualifiers and if you are telling someone who has started a process to go now when he has just two more games left to play, I don’t think it is right.
“I don’t think whoever is coming in will have anything meaningful to contribute more than what is already on ground.
“So, all we need now is to rally round our brother Keshi and pray that God will bless the team with victory in their two remaining matches.
“I have spoken to Keshi and, by the grace of God, by Tuesday or Wednesday he should resume his normal duties as the coach of our national team,” he said.

Nigeria given deadline to avoid seven-month ban

Nigeria have been given until Friday to overturn a recent court ruling that voided its football elections or Fifa will ban them until May 2015.
In a letter sent to the Nigerian Football Federation on Tuesday, Fifa said their directive must be met by midday, 31 October.

Fifa wants the reinstatement of the NFF board that was elected on 30 September.
If Nigeria fail to comply, they will be expelled from qualification for next year's Africa Cup of Nations.
The Super Eagles are the reigning champions but are now facing the very real prospect of missing the chance to defend their title at the 17 January to 8 February finals.
Already this year Nigeria have been banned twice for government interference in the NFF and Fifa warned the country in September and again in October that another incident would result in a lengthy ban.
Fifa's action follows last week's ruling by the Jos High Court annulled last month's election of Amaju Pinnick as Nigeria Football Federation president.
Justice Ambrose Allagoa ruled that the elective congress of the NFF should not be recognised as the Jos High Court had put in place 11 days earlier an order that the elections could not be held.
This injunction was brought by two members of the previous NFF executive led by Chris Giwa, which was stripped of its authority after elections that took it to power on 26 August were deemed invalid by Fifa.
The court order was ignored by the NFF, which went ahead with their congress and the Pinnick-led executive was put in place.
Justice Allagoa has ruled, however, that the original injunction remains in place and therefore the 30 September congress should not be recognised.
Fifa's letter said: "As stated in our previous letters, Fifa stressed that should the electoral process and the instalment of the newly elected NFF board be affected by any interference, the case would be brought to the attention of the appropriate Fifa bodies for a suspension of the NFF until the next Fifa Congress due to take place on 28 and 29 May 2015.
"We thus hope that by Friday midday, we will receive the requested evidence in order to avoid the adverse consequences of a suspension."

Again, @Atiku denies stories making the rounds that he’s leaving APC

Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar has denied reports suggesting that he is planning to leave the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) if he fails to get the party’s nod to fly the its flag in next year’s Presidential election.
Atiku, who is a frontrunner among the individuals positioning themselves to get the party’s nod, released a statement on Tuesday in Abuja saying the rumours were the handiwork on troublemakers.
He said he had traced the person behind the rumour to an unnamed member of the APC from the North-East zone, who he said was working for another presidential aspirant from the opposition party.
The statement said, “This information is not only egregiously false, but our investigations have traced it to a senior APC member from the North-East zone, who is working to further the presidential ambitions of another aspirant within the party.
“He is also known to be working with certain elements in the Peoples Democratic Party.
“Sadly, The Atiku Media Office has over the past few months had to issue a number of rejoinders against falsehoods published by the newspapers.
“We, hereby, advise the public to completely disregard any information about Atiku Abubakar on this matter.”
Atiku said he believes in the ability of the APC to bring about change if it wins the elections next year urging the media to be factual and accurate in their reports.

SynagogueCollapse: Church lawyers grill NEMA boss as inquest begins second week

The coroner’s inquest concerning the Synagogue church building crash entered its second week today at the Lagos High Court in Ikeja.
Three witnesses testified at the sitting today. They’re Prof. John Obafunwa, the Lagos chief medical examiner; Oladotun Lasoju for the Lagos Material Testing Laboratory, and Ibrahim Farinloye for the National Emergency Management Agency.
Prof. Obafunwa said their autopsy showed that the dead victims died of crush injuries. He said, ‘The bodies were mutilated and severely crushed. They had multiple injuries, fractured bones, fractured limbs as well as skull injuries,’

The pathologist also said his team had begun DNA and dental analysis of the bodies in order to identify the people. He said the team is working with the South African Department of Health and would submit its final report soon.
Meanwhile, the coroner again urged families of victims to come to the court and submit identification details so they can get their bodies.
In his own testimony, Lasoju said the Lagos Material Testing Laboratory has begun testing materials that were used to construct the building. He said, “We visited the site as part of the rudiments in the investigation. I want to assure the court that the Lagos State Material Testing Laboratory is working assiduously and I believe the result will be out in a maximum period of three weeks.”
Farinloye’s testimony was the high point of today’s hearing. He was grilled for close to three hours about his agency, NEMA’s response to the accident from the first day onward. Farinloye is the NEMA head of operations, search and rescue.
He told the court that the church people harassed him and his men and impeded them from working when they got to the place on the first day. But the church’s lawyers questioned his narrative and tried to disprove his testimony. They tried to establish that the NEMA team didn’t arrive quickly enough and with all the needed equipment, and that the church had begun the rescue work before NEMA arrived.
The church’s lawyers also tried to prove that Farinloye made a mistake in thinking that the people who blocked him and his men were members or officials of the church, and tried to prove that NEMA faced problems because they didn’t liaise with authorised officials of the church. The NEMA boss sounded incoherent during this interrogation.
Meanwhile, people who tried to enter the court premises with placards in support of TB Joshua were blocked at the gates. This included the physically challenged people who were locked out last Friday.
This inquest is an inquiry into the manner and cause of the building crash, and it’s headed by Alexander Komolafe. It’s not a regular court in that people aren’t being prosecuted and there are no trials. The purpose of the coroner’s sittings is simply to find out the facts and establish the truth.
The inquest will continue tomorrow Wednesday, October 29.

Amaechi Replies Jonathan: I Spoke About Governance, Not Your Person

Rivers State governor, Mr Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi has said that the issues he raised at the recently held mega rally in Port Harcourt were about governance and not a direct attack on the persons of President Goodluck Jonathan, his wife, Dame Patience and the federal government.

The Presidency had in a statement issued in Abuja on Sunday, and signed by presidential spokesman, Dr Reuben Abati described the governor as a rascal and blackmailer, who is always willing to denigrate the office of the President in a reckless attempt to promote his selfish political interest.

But Amaechi, who spoke through the state commissioner for information, Mrs Ibim Semenitari, told newsmen in Port Harcourt yesterday that he never referred to the persons of the president and his wife, but only referred to issues that have direct bearing on the people of the state.

Semenitari said, “The first thing to say is that clearly, that statement must have been written before the rally. If it wasn’t written before the rally, then I am at a loss as to where Dr Abati saw the so-called statement against the president, his wife and the federal government.

“There was no point during the rally when the wife of the president was mentioned and that was because issues being discussed were not issues about persons but about governance. The issues were in no way related to her as she does not hold any official position in government. Therefore, there is no need referring to her where governance issues are being discussed.

“As regards to Mr President, again, Governor Amaechi did not refer to the president in any personal capacity.”

He did refer to the fact that the federal government’s Ministry of Aviation has not completed the remodelling of the Port Harcourt International Airport, which was started at the same time as Enugu, as Lagos, as Kano, as Calabar.”

“He did refer to the fact that the Rivers people were being treated like refugees and we have become internally-displaced persons in our own state and our only offence was that we gave the President two million votes in 2011. He did complain that the Rivers people only feel marginalised, but are poor cousins to the Federal Government. He did complain as to why Rivers people continue not to have the funds that come from their oil wells and the fact that the oil wells that belong to Rivers State were taken to Bayelsa and Abia States.”

2015 AFCON Qualifier: Super Eagles to train in Warri for Congo

For all the Warri guys, this is for you....lol.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has announced that the Super Eagles will train in Warri,Delta State, ahead of the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Congo in Point-Noire. NFF General Secretary, Musa Amadu dropped this hint while meeting with the Super Eagles technical crew and support staff inside his office in Abuja. Nigeria is billed to confront the Red Devils of Congo on November 15 in a must win game that will be played on an artificial pitch.

“The pitch in Warri where the Super Eagles will train is an artificial pitch and should provide the required feel and match conditions as the pitch where the game will be played in Congo,”Amadu revealed. “This is a very crucial game and we cannot afford to take anything for granted. “After the game in Congo, the team will then proceed to Uyo to prepare for the last qualifier against South Africa. “The Nigeria Football Federation is working round the clock to ensuring that all the team needs to make a success of the November assignments are provided so that the Super Eagles are able to defend their title in Morocco.

“For us,the real challenge is to go to Congo and get the desired result that will put our qualification aspirations back on the right track,” Amadu added. The Super Eagles will need to beat Congo with a clear two goal margin or get a higher scoreline of victory than Congo got in Calabar to be ahead of the Red Devils in Group A after the November 15 clash.
